Making a Difference

The Priority Neighbourhoods Project (PNP) carried out door to door questionnaires in Eightlands and Ashworth last September and October. The top three community safety issues you raised were:

Ashworth                              Eightlands

1. Gangs of young people                            1. Drug dealing

2. Speeding traffic                                   2. Misuse of drugs

3. Going out alone at night                          3. Speeding traffic

PNP are arranging community meetings to look at ways of tackling these problems and they are hoping to set up a community group which can work at resolving these issues alongside agencies.

If you live in Ashworth or Eightlands and would like more information on how to get involved in PNP work contact Rachel Oldroyd on 01924 482191

A Thank you from the Government

Pathfinder has recently been congratulated on improving the local neighbourhood. Deborah Collis, chair of the Pathfinder board, received a letter from Phil Woolas MP (Minister for Local Government).

In the letter he said that the “neighbourhood management partnership has been particularly successful in improving results in education and crime. This is making a valuable contribution to improving the delivery of local services.”

The aim is to make our neighbourhoods “as welcoming, as inclusive and as successful as possible”, he continued.

Thanks to all those involved with Pathfinder, but we must ask the question: Can we do more? The answer is certainly a big YES, and with your help, from your neighbourhood, we can continue to make things happen. If you want to get involved, call one of the team on 01924 325 211.

Big Changes coming to Eightlands Park!

Eightlands and Ashworth residents have spoken out, kicked up a fuss, and got a result they deserve.

Eightlands Villa (behind Dewsbury Railway Station) is to be transformed into a children’s play area. New play equipment, planting and better lighting will be provided and one of the walls will be lowered after calls from residents, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and Wardens to tackle the issue. A problem with drug users and drug dealers visiting the area was highlighted in a survey of Eightlands and Ashworth residents.

The issue was brought to the Neighbourhood Management Group where the Police gave their full backing and carried out a community safety audit.

Margot Rowley, chair of the Eightlands TRA and vice-chair of the Pathfinder Board is delighted that something is being done: “Residents feel intimidated on a night and that is not right. People round here don’t want drug dealers on their doorsteps and its good news that we are being listened to”.

Kirklees Neighbourhood Wardens have helped with the clear up of the area and the new play equipment and planting will be installed in the coming months.

 Dewsbury West gets its own

Domestic Violence Educator

Helen Ford is the Domestic Violence Educator for Dewsbury West. She will be forging links with local communities and schools to offer support, advice and guidance to all those who know of, or suffer directly from domestic violence.

Violent crime is high in Dewsbury West and much of it happens in people’s own homes and is committed by family members. Helen wants to find out how services can work more effectively together to give the victims of this awful crime the best possible help.

Helen is based at the new Sure Start building on Dewsbury Moor, and is very keen to get started on what is seen as an opportunity to educate people on their options to put a stop to their suffering.

You can contact Helen on 01924 236 170. Helen will be glad to advise on the help and support available to tackle this problem.
