Housing & Environment Theme Group – Case Study
“Landlord Accreditation Scheme”
A suggestion was through the Housing & Environment theme group to look at improving the level of private sector accommodation across Dewsbury West.
Information produced supported the fact that many areas of private housing were in need of improving quite drastically. A plan was designed to identify the main landlords and look at getting them to sign up to a criteria that would improve the private housing stock in a number of ways that would be both beneficial to the tenant and landlord alike. The scheme keeps landlords updated on issues such as licensing and health & safety, and their commitment to providing better housing for local residents.
The scheme was originally piloted across Dewsbury West and is now being rolled out across Kirklees with some encouraging signs. Landlords are beginning to engage with the process and the results will and are speaking for themselves.
