Community Engagement Theme Group – Case Study
“Making it Happen”
DWNMP undertook a consultation event for young people in February 06 called ‘Making it Happen’ and invited young people from across the area to identify issues which would improve their neighbourhoods. Since young people feel that they have been asked their opinions and seen few results so far, we concentrated on working on issues which the young people could develop further.
24 young people worked with a community arts company to identify, expand and develop the following issues over three days of their half term break:
- improving the football pitch in Eightlands - improving services at the Arena Centre, Westtown - developing biking facilities in Scout Hill - improving the image of Ravensthorpe - addressing bullying.
Two months later, the football pitch has been improved, the young people’s service have expanded the activities at the Arena Centre, local Councillors have agreed to look at the issues in developing biking facilities and one member of our group has applied to join the Youth Forum. This engagement work is ongoing.
